Singapore Drivin'

We've lived here one year and I'm still not 100% comfortable driving. Driver's are much more aggressive than they are back in good 'ole Oklahoma! Of course, there are just a few more people crammed on this island than there are in Oklahoma. A friend told me not to long after moving here that lanes are "suggestions" to Singapore drivers...they are absolutely all over the place!! They weave in and out of lanes...jockeying for position! Taxi drivers will drive as fast as they can in the shortest amount of space...always in a hurry to get that next driver. And there are motorcycles everywhere...they drive in between the lanes of cars weaving in and out of traffic. Robert says it seems ironic that they are allowed to do so given the governmental control of everything. Also heard the statistic that 70,000 "motorbikes" as they are called here come over from Malaysia everyday. The speed limit on the highways is 90km/ph which is only 55mph, so compared to our 75mph in the States it feels like you're crawling. Their are speed cameras positioned on the highways and if you are caught speeding you will get a ticket in the mail. Fortunately they have signs posted warning you the cameras are ahead. The highways are all known by initials...PIE, CTE, SLE, KJE,BKE etc. It is so funny to listen to the morning and evening radio shows as they rattle off all the highways where wrecks are located. But probably the biggest reason I'm still not feeling comfortable driving...is that I'm driving on the WRONG side of the car!!!!
